A confession from Sara Brown!

I’m really struggling to stay on top of all the demands in my life. I’m not stressed or unhappy, just conscious that I’m not getting everything that I need to do done – this blog included! (I’m meant to post to this blog 5 times a week and many of you will be used to this).

A summary of the exciting demands in my life:

  1. Fulfilling design solutions for ongoing customers who are now approaching me! (After chasing customers and dealing with not so great clients this is refreshing and very very good).
  2. Ongoing work for the now post launch of the Best of Zambia project. (The launch went much better than we could possibly have imagined and now we have to fine tune our product quickly – SEO, article writing, copy writing, traffic generation, delivering on product and ROI for clients)!
  3. I’m now being approached by people who have heard of Success University and want to work with me and that means I need to ensure I support them as much as I promise to do. (Again this absolutely fab because I love the product and the idea of working with people for mutual benefit).
  4. My great friend who I shared a room with at boarding school for a whole year is stopping by for 3 days from Thursday. We’ve not seen each other for over 10 years and this time we get to meet our other halves! (Really looking forward to this and the punting experience in Cambridge and grateful that their visit forces me to stop for 3 whole days – but must tidy house and prep guest bedroom)!
  5. I have a heap of speaking roles coming up at my Toastmaster club and that too is brill because it helps me achieve my goal for ‘Competent Communicator’ Award by June but it involves a lot of preparation!
  6. Of course I have a relationship to keep happy too!

Everything pretty much involves the above things. The solution I guess is to change my language from ‘I’m not getting everything done’ to ‘I can get everything done’ and I just need to work on my scheduling and drop a few things down the list of importance.

But really what I’d like to do is say to the readers of this blog, my twitter followers, by customers and friends that bare with me, take this confession on bored, stick with me – there’s so much exciting stuff on it’s way!

Thank you!

Personal development and understanding your values

Yesterday I attended a personal development session called ‘Motivate ME’ run by Welland Enterprise. It was phenomenal as were the people on the course.

The biggest thing that I came away with was a better understanding of my values – what I believe to be of the greatest importance and of the highest priority in my life. Things like ove, health, happiness, opportunity, creativity, honesty etc. If you understand you main values you can use these to help understand a number of things:

  • What really motivates you
  • What motivates other people
  • The solid foundation for your goals
  • The best way to make decisions

My key values are freedom, contribution, people/relationships, well-being, fun, and development. By knowing these I can align myself with projects and partners that feed my need for these key values. I can use them to make decisions. If I have route a, b or c to take I can measure them against them fulfilling my values and choose the best route that matches my values. I can also use my values to help me set my goals and the direction I choose for my life. Using my values as a basis for all of these keeps me in balance and allows life to flow. The whole concept fits in with my life long learning approach.

The session was run by Lisa Spencer-Arnell who can help you figure out your values and does a lot of work on work, life balance.

Nokia embrace the personal development trend

tim-nokia-logo Nokia has highlighted seven trends as key defining directions that the mobile phone market is heading in. These trends were specific to emerging markets like Africa although they do have the global view in mind. Number five on their list grabbed my attention.

“New learning economy: Personal development tools will fill the mobile content pipeline, and brands will embrace that trend… He also predicted that the next billion digital customers will use the mobile device before they ever access the internet from a PC.”

That is exactly what I have been suggesting in previous blogs and exactly what I tell people when I share the Success University opportunity. It is what the late Economist Peter Drucker predicted in 2005 when he coined the term ‘webucation’, just as Success University first kicked open it’s doors for business.

Personal development and on-line education is most definitely on the rise. Imagine that! I repeat the quote: “Personal development tools will fill the mobile content pipeline, and brands will embrace that trend…” So if large mobile phone companies are recognising this key trend, isn’t it time you did? Success University offers you a chance to market the ever increasingly demanded product of personal development. I’m in. Are you?

Incidentally it was Peter Drucker who first predicted the mobile phone industry as an emerging industry of opportunity. He was right then and he’s right on the mark for webucation as well!

Time management – 6 steps toward effective time filling!

I’ve just realised how behind I am in this blog! Isn’t it amazing how easy it is to fall out of a good habit. I had blogging once every week day down to a fine art – it was a first thing in the morning job. Then a few early morning meetings and some so called ‘pressing’ jobs and bam, it’s been 5 days since I blogged.

This reminded me about the ‘constant battle’ it is to manage ones time effectively. Personally, I must praise myself because I’ve been brilliant and gotten rid of the stress my never ending list was causing. Here are some things I did which you may find useful:

  1. Stop seeing it as a time management battle! I started to see time as a blessing – I am blessed to have the ability to fill it effectively. The word ‘battle’ is negative and filled me with stress but telling myself I have the ability to fill my time effectively empowers me and makes me feel good and capable.
  2. Carry a diary – always! For me, it’s a good old fashioned one I can write in. For others it’s a phone of some sort. It does not matter as long as you can schedule things in effectively as a result of having an overview of days and weeks to come.
  3. People understand you can’t see to their every wish, they actually understand that you have other customers and responsibilities! So, you can say, “This week is not looking good for me” even if you say it on Monday. You don’t have to do everything right now!
  4. Balance your week between meetings, networking, family time, you time and work time. Very often it’s easy to be flying about doing lots of so called important things but if you have no work time allocated, you’ll get stressed as your ‘to do’ pile literally piles up. You’ll also feel tired and frustrated if you have no family or you time!
  5. Monitor your thoughts and accept only that which feel good. Stress and worry feels bad so when you have a stressful or worrisome thought think of something nice instead to something you can appreciate. In time it will happen naturally!
  6. Forgive yourself when you slip up and ask yourself what you can learn from the scenario – like I’m going to forgive myself for not blogging for 5 whole days!

Is personal development necessary?

As I’m promoting personal development I thought I’d ask this basic question! I’m going to answer it with a quote from Ben Franklin:

“If a man empties his purse into his head, no one can take it from him.”

So if you invest in your learning, you invest in your mind. Quite simply, the knowledge in your head and the way you control your mind cannot be taken away from you. In contrast, everything physical that we have can be taken away in some way. Invest in your mind and even if your worldly possessions were taken away from you at least you’d have the knowledge an right mind set to build it all again.

In my opinion, personal development is key to wealth generation and all round success. Find out more about my thoughts on my personal development website

Diary from the M25 – finding the positive in times of stress

Yesterday I picked my mum up from Heathrow. She’s back from a 2 month trip to Zambia, where she has been setting up another arm to the family business with my Dad and sister. It’s a web site promoting travel to Zambia.

It was pouring with rain, massive lorries that bully you were out in force, it was windy, my headlights needs realigning and we got stuck in traffic for a while. But I was so exciting to see her. It got me thinking. Very often there are many things around us that may create stress or frustration. But if we focus on that which is positive and exciting it is very easy to forget the negative vibes and quite simply avoid the stress and frustration. I’m learning so much from my Success University lessons. I decided at the beginning of the year to spend just 30 minutes a day accessing the personal development material on Success University. I’m astounded by the results in myself and the amount of stuff I’m retaining! I’m calmer, I have not lost my temper for absolute ages, I understand more success principles and am putting them into action. I’m more in love with me!

I recommend Success University wholeheartedly. Read more about on personal development on my website.

Preserving your energy through mind set control

Many of us moan non stop and women in particular are very good at holding on to the past. Here’s something to help all of us when we are feeling down in the dumps. Remember that it just takes a change in attitude to shift our whole thought process to something much more fulfilling.

“It saps much more of your vital energy to be miserable and depressed than to be happy and content. It robs more of your energy to hold on to anger and grievances than it does to let go and enjoy life. It takes more energy to sustain bitterness and bad memories than it does to find something to appreciate in front of you and in your surroundings. And that stealing of energy makes you look old before your time!” (From the book The Essence of Womanhood: Reawakening the authentic feminine by Susie Heath)

Susie’s book should be a woman’s manual! I have a short way to go before I finish it and I shall revisit it over and over again! I had the pleasure of meeting Susie at a recent event and I look forward to more material from her. Click here for more personal development tips. Also read more on personal growth on my website.

Leadership – are you developing leaders or followers?

February 27, 2009 at 1:48 pm | Posted in leadership, personal development, Uncategorized, who am i? | 2 Comments
Tags: , , , ,

I’ve recently began to look more closely at leadership because if it is my goals to ‘change my existence from what was mediocre to complete success by the time I am 30, positively affecting as many people along the way’ (see my bio) then I need to become a better leader and develop other leaders around me. And so today I’ve added the leadership section to this blog. Watch this space as I explore and share.

To start with I’ve been looking at the difference between leaders who want to develop followers and leaders who want leaders.

Leaders who want to develop followers:

  • want to be needed
  • want to be recognised
  • choose to focus on other peoples’ weaknesses (thus developing co-dependent relationships)
  • hold on to their power
  • spend time with their followers
  • grow the organisation by attracting more followers
  • lead people in exactly the same way
  • expect little commitment
  • have high expectations of themselves and low expectations of others
  • will only impact those they touch

On the other hand, leaders who want to develop leaders:

  • want to be succeeded
  • want to be replaced
  • choose to focus on other people’s strengths (eventually getting rid of their weaknesses)
  • will give away their power
  • will invest time in their leaders
  • grow their organisation by training their leaders
  • lead people differently dependent on their needs
  • expect much commitment
  • have a high expectation of themselves and others
  • will impact more people than they touch as their impact spreads through the leaders they have created

So do you want to develop followers or leaders? I’d like to create more leaders.

This information is based on what I learned from an excellent audio course by Barry Donalson via Success University. Learn more leadership skills at Success University and read more on my personal development website.

Success University Affiliate Testimonials

I harp on and on about Success University but here are some words of wisdom from other affiliates.

“I love personal development and knew I could stand behind the product. It changed my life in amazing ways and I wanted to share that with others. Also, I would not be here if this was not a network marketing company… it’s the most exciting form of business in the world!” (JASON CARDAMONE, United States)

“My husband introduced me to Success University four months ago. Although I was reluctant to comply at first, the plan was so clear I quickly realized that it was a perfect fit for me. With the major economic upheavals we are now witnessing, Success University’s motto, courses, faculty, support team and passion for children’s wellbeing are definitely aiming to make the world a better place! I believe anyone who applies themselves to
Success University’s educational opportunity will inadvertently be financially free!” (LYDIENNE C. MBUA, Botswana)

“However, the core reason I joined Success University was that I had a strong desire to leave a job that did not appreciate me and had snail-like career growth! I want to triple the number of countries my team is present in
and be in a position to empower lives globally.” (MUNEER AL-BUSAIDI, Bahrain)

“The simple logic of having a learning system that was in itself a highly successful network marketing business. Success University offers the chance to build a significant income, something that I and my wife, Gill, want to
develop; to enable us to enjoy a great lifestyle and to provide the best we possibly can for our families.” (DAVID ALLEN, United Kingdom)

That’s it for today. Join the excitement and read more about success university on my personal development website.

Network Marketing – even banks take on the concept!

For decades network marketers have struggled with bad press and opposition. But Security Savings Bank today announced that Jesse Torres their President and Chief Operating Officer, will speak at an up and coming conference. Interestingly his topic will be ‘A Banker’s Guide to Social Network Marketing’.

“With a user base of nearly 600 million, online social networkers provide bankers with a good reason to learn about what Internet-based social networks are and how to use them for reaching their target audience as part of their overall marketing program,” said Mr. Torres.

Traditional marketing techniques have become ineffective in shaping consumer purchasing decisions. Consumers are increasingly relying on peers to provide honest and unbiased information. This creates an opportunity for banks that embrace the change and alter their practices to become more transparent and willing to create a communal environment where consumers can come together to share information.” (Mr Torres)

Read more here.

The growth of social  network sites is undeniable and it looks like the penny is finally dropping – people buy people, not massive TV campaigns or cold corporate voice recordings. Network marketing is set to grow and grow and grow! Logically now is the time to get on board. Have a look at my personal network marketing favourite – Success University.
